Yamunotri, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is one of the four sacred sites of the Chardham Yatra. As a result, it holds deep spiritual value for devotees of Goddess Yamuna. The temple sits at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks, dense forests, and natural hot springs, the region offers a peaceful and divine atmosphere. Because of this, Yamunotri becomes a memorable experience for every pilgrim. Moreover, as the first stop of the Chardham circuit, it welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
History & Spiritual Significance
Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal built the Yamunotri Temple, and since then, it has carried a rich spiritual legacy. Hindu scriptures describe Yamuna as the daughter of Surya Dev and the sister of Yama, the God of Death. Due to these beliefs, devotees consider the sacred waters of the Yamuna River powerful and purifying. In fact, many pilgrims visit the temple to seek purity, healing, and inner peace. Additionally, the rituals, chants, and calm surroundings make the temple an even more powerful spiritual destination.
Trek Route & Journey
The journey to Yamunotri begins from Janki Chatti, the last motorable point. From here, pilgrims start a 5–6 km trek that leads to the temple. Along the way, stunning waterfalls, flowing streams, and lush green valleys enhance the beauty of the route. Furthermore, trekkers can choose to walk or use pony and palki services.
One of the most important stops on the route is Surya Kund, a natural hot spring. Here, devotees cook rice and potatoes as prasadam and later offer it to Goddess Yamuna. Overall, the entire trek feels divine and refreshing.
Darshan Timings & Temple Schedule
The Yamunotri Temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) and closes on Bhai Dooj (October–November). Heavy snowfall blocks the region in winter, so the idol shifts to Kharsali Village for worship during the closure period.
